The spread of microplastic pollution
Microplastics can now be found all over the world: not only in the ocean, the air and the soil, but also in tap and mineral water , and even in the foods we eat, such as vegetables and fruits .
Microplastics enter the human body through various routes, and microplastic pollution is spreading not only in the natural environment but also inside the human body.
Microplastics Detected in the Human Body
There is no single way that microplastics can enter our bodies: inhalation and swallowing are the main ways, but they can also enter through other body orifices.
Microplastics are tiny, measuring less than 5mm in size, and have been found in the human digestive tract, lungs, blood, and fetal placenta.
And a new study has found microplastics in the human heart.
Microplastics found in the heart
A research report published in July 2023. This report marks the first time that microplastics have been detected in human heart tissue.
The study, conducted by scientists at Beijing Anzhen Hospital in China, looked at tissue samples taken from the hearts of 15 patients aged 40 to 75 across China.
The tissue samples were taken while the patients were undergoing cardiac surgery, and in addition to the hearts, blood samples from seven of the patients were also examined.
Surprising results
Although the sample size studied was small, the results were surprising.
The researchers found significant amounts of plastic particles in the heart tissue: nine different types of plastic were found in the five types of heart tissue, some of which had entered the heart during surgery, but others of types that would not have been present during surgery.
They also found microplastics in all blood samples they examined, with significantly higher amounts found in cardiac tissue than in the blood of the same individuals.
This suggests that microplastics that end up in cardiac tissue may accumulate and remain within the heart.
The cardiovascular effects of microplastics are still poorly understood, and more research is needed to determine the exact risks.
