The cosmetic ingredient acrylates copolymer is a microplastic

Microplastics in cosmetics

There are over 1,200 types of microplastics used as cosmetic ingredients. Most of what are called synthetic polymers in Japan are defined by European environmental organizations as non-biodegradable liquid microplastics.

Even if you want to avoid putting microplastics on your skin, some people may find it difficult to avoid them when they see the complicated names and numerous types.

In this article, I will write about a microplastic ingredient called "acrylates copolymer" that is used in many cosmetics.

What is acrylates copolymer?

Acrylates copolymers are used in a variety of cosmetic products.

In particular, since restrictions on the use of microbeads began in Japan in 2016 , the use of acrylates copolymers has increased significantly, replacing microplastics commonly known as " microbeads ," such as polyethylene, PET, PMMA, and PVC.

When two or more small molecules (monomers) composed of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, etc. are bonded together, the polymer is called an "acrylates copolymer."

Acrylates copolymers can be bonded to many different types of molecules, resulting in countless variations and different names for each.

Have you ever seen an ingredient called "acrylic acid (acrylates) polymer" on a list of all ingredients in cosmetics?

  • (acrylic acid/alkyl acrylate (C12-22)) copolymer
  • (Acrylates/VP) Copolymer
  • (Acrylic Acid/Stearyl Methacrylate/Dimethicone Methacrylate) Copolymer

Ingredients with names like these are acrylates copolymers, or microplastics.

Why use acrylates copolymers?

  • To give skin firmness
  • Anti-wrinkle cream creates a film on the skin surface
  • To make makeup resistant to water and sweat
  • To add texture and moisture resistance to hair styling products
  • To prevent static electricity in hair products and to prevent the settling of powder ingredients
  • To add adhesion to nail products

Acrylates copolymers are used for these purposes. However, they have no beauty benefits for the skin, hair, nails, etc. They are mainly used to improve usability and stability.

Knowing why a cosmetic ingredient is included can give you clues as to whether or not you really need that ingredient.
