Ammonia: A cosmetic ingredient toxic to aquatic life

Ammonia is a cosmetic ingredient?

Ammonia has a distinctive smell. I'm sure many of you have experienced it at least once during a science experiment in your school days. Because it is highly toxic, you had to protect your hands and eyes when handling it.

Did you know that ammonia is actually used in the everyday products and cosmetics we use?

The impact of ammonia on the natural world

Ammonia is a substance that exists in nature, but it is known to be toxic to aquatic organisms when present in excessive amounts, impairing physiological functions such as growth and reproduction.

Despite this, humans continue to use products that contain ammonia and ammonia compounds, which then enter wastewater and can accumulate at harmful levels in aquatic ecosystems.

In addition to being used in cosmetics and daily necessities, a lot of ammonia is also used as fertilizer for agricultural crops. This may run off with rainwater and lead to water pollution.

Impact on humans

When humans inhale ammonia, it can affect the respiratory system, cause severe eye irritation, and can lead to bronchitis and pneumonia.

When ammonia comes into contact with the skin, it dissolves any moisture present on the skin and turns into ammonium hydroxide.

Ammonium hydroxide is a chemical that causes necrosis of tissue on contact. It is also known to induce asthma and cause sensitization. Therefore, people with asthma, people who are sensitive to chemicals, and people with sensitive skin may need to be especially careful.

However, there is actually very little scientific information about the neurotoxicity, reproductive toxicity, and developmental effects of skin sensitization.
It is an irritant that can cause severe burns and blisters, but much more is unclear.

Contains ammonia

Ammonia and ammonium compounds are found in hair colorants, detergents, cleaning products, and more.

By itself, it is a clear gas, but it combines with other substances or chemical compounds. Ammonium hydroxide, ammonium chloride, and ammonium glycyrrhizinate are some ammonium compounds commonly used in personal care products.

And the following ingredients are found in cosmetics:

  • Ammonia water
  • PEG-7 Dimethicone Ammonium Sulfate
  • (VA/crotonic acid) ammonium copolymer
  • Ammonium alkyl acrylate copolymer
  • (Acrylates/Methylstyrene/Styrene) Ammonium Copolymer

There are many types of ammonium compounds.

To avoid unnecessary contact, make sure that the product does not contain any ingredients that contain "ammonia" or "ammonium."
