What is Propanediol?
Propanediol is an ingredient often used in skin care products such as lotions, milky lotions, and cleansers. It is derived from corn sugar.
It is formulated as a moisturizer and an emollient to soften the skin, and also acts as a dissolver for other ingredients.
Is it similar to PG?
Before propanediol was introduced, there was an ingredient called PG (propylene glycol) that was used in many cosmetics.
PG was generally considered a safe ingredient. However, there were frequent cases of it causing contact dermatitis . It was also pointed out that it may be an allergen for some people. In other words, there was a relatively high possibility that PG would cause redness and itching of the skin.
This is especially true for people who already have some kind of skin disease.
Propanediol has replaced PG. The two substances are very similar. However, their molecular structures are different. This means that the effects they have when used in cosmetics are different.
This is why there have been several reports of PG causing skin and eye irritation and sensitization , while propanediol is considered to be less harmful.
Why Propanediol is Preferred
A study of 200 people showed that propanediol was less irritating and less likely to cause skin sensitization, suggesting that the percentage of people who may experience skin problems was very low.
Of course, there is a small chance that propanediol can irritate the skin or cause an allergic reaction, but it is generally considered safer than PG.
In addition, while PG is derived from petroleum, propanediol is derived from plants, which is why it is increasingly being used in vegan cosmetics .
Function of Propanediol
Propanediol is used in many cosmetics because it has multiple functions, such as:
Dissolve the other ingredients
For example, it is an excellent solvent for poorly soluble ingredients such as salicylic acid and ferulic acid.
Reduce viscosity
It is used in a variety of cosmetic products where reduced viscosity is required, such as:
- Shampoo and conditioner
- Foundation
- mascara
- Body soap
- Hairspray
- Facial cleanser
- Lotion or emulsion
Increases moisturizing properties
When added to moisturizing hair conditioners and skin care products, it is expected to draw moisture into the skin and increase its moisture retention.
Prevents water loss
Its excellent emollient properties prevent moisture loss and leave the skin soft and smooth.
Lighten the feel
It provides a light texture and a non-greasy feel, and also helps maintain the stability of cosmetic products.
Is it safe to use during pregnancy ?
There are currently no detailed studies examining the effects of propanediol on pregnant women, but studies have shown that giving high doses to animals did not cause birth defects or miscarriages.
